A small casino room inside the hotel, open in the evenings

Daintreve Casino is on the ground floor of this house, at the back, behind the Louvre Bar. It is the hotel's own casino room, in the same building and run by the people who run the front desk, and you reach it from inside without going out.

From the front desk, walk straight through the lobby, past the foot of the stair, along the short corridor beside the bar. The timber doors at the end lead in, about forty paces away, and a member of staff stands at the door whenever the room is open.

The room itself

Eight tables, a bar, and no clocks hidden anywhere

The casino floor holds eight tables and a bar along the short wall. On a Wednesday in the wet season perhaps three tables are open, and on a Saturday in July all eight. The room is quiet: the floor is timber, nobody plays music, and the ceiling fans are the loudest thing in it.

Dress is a collared shirt and closed shoes, so beachwear, bare feet and wet swimmers stay outside. That sounds obvious, but it's worth saying out loud in Port Douglas.

Last entry is at half past midnight and the casino closes at one. The bar in the room stops serving fifteen minutes before that.

Age and identification

18, and we check every time

Queensland sets the casino age at 18 and we apply it to everyone. Photo ID is checked at the door on every visit, and a check on an earlier day doesn't count. A guest who ate at the long table an hour earlier will still be asked; it's the rule, and the staff are only following it.

A passport, an Australian driver licence or a proof-of-age card will do. A photograph of a document on a telephone won't.

No one under 18 comes into the casino at any hour, even while it is closed and being cleaned.

Limits, and stopping

Both are arranged with a person, on the spot

Limits are set on the casino floor by the staff working it. Before you sit down, tell them what you want your limit to be for the evening and it will be written down and held to. If you'd like them to suggest a figure, just ask.

If you want to stop for a while, or altogether, that is arranged in person at reception. Self-exclusion is a conversation at the front desk: you sign there and it takes effect the same evening. The desk is staffed from half past six in the morning until eleven at night.

The floor offers no credit, and there is no cash machine in the room or the corridor outside it.

What this website does not do

No online games, bets, deposits or payments

This is a land-based casino room inside a hotel in Queensland. The website describes the room and the hotel around it; it doesn't run games, take bets, hold an account in your name or accept payments of any kind.

To play, you come to Davidson Street, show identification at the door and sit down. That is the only way in, and none of the casino happens on this page.
